Banana Trifle

An airy dessert with banana slices, light whipped topping, luscious pudding, vanilla cake and swirls of decadent caramel sauce. This dessert is sure to please a crowd!

I absolutely love making trifles. They’re fun to make but also so versatile! You can make it according to your own taste buds. Feel like chocolate? Use chocolate cake! How about red velvet? Go for it and don’t forget the cream cheese icing!
This time around I made a vanilla cake banana trifle for my dad’s 75th birthday party and it was a hit with everyone who tried it!

To make this a super easy dessert, I cut some corners using ready made whipped topping which you can find in the freezer section in any major grocery store. I also used instant pudding which is quickly mixed with cold milk and finally a boxed cake mix that is really easy to make.

HOW DO I MAKE IT?
You’ll start by baking the cake according to the package instructions. I like to make the cake ahead of time to allow it to cool completely.
You’ll prepare all the ingredients so it’s easy to layer everything at once starting with the cooled cake, cut into 1″ squares. Next, you’ll whisk the pudding according to the package details and set aside to thicken. Finally, you’ll slice the bananas.
To build the trifle, you’ll start by adding the first layer of cake pieces. Drizzle the cake with caramel sauce then spread a layer of whipped topping. Next, spread a layer of graham crumbs then a layer of bananas. Finish off the first layer with pudding then repeat the steps: cake, caramel sauce, whipped topping, graham crumbs, banana and whipped topping.

TIPS TO MAKE IT:
1. Don’t use ripe bananas. If the bananas are a little firm, they won’t brown as quickly
2. Crumble some of the cake pieces to get an airy feel when you bite into it.
3. Use cool whip topping for a quicker whipped cream.
4. Use an instant pudding package for a quick pudding.
5. Allow to set in the fridge for at least 4 hours to overnight.

Ingredients

4-5 bananas, sliced

1 pkg vanilla instant pudding mix

2 cups graham crumbs

3 cups whipped topping (whipped cream)

1 box vanilla cake mix prepared and cooled

Caramel sauce for drizzling

Instructions

Bake vanilla cake according to the package instructions.  Allow to cool completely then break into 1” cubes.

Whisk together vanilla pudding ingredients according to the package instructions and set aside.

In a trifle bowl, add a layer of cake.  Then add a drizzle of caramel sauce.  Spread a layer of whipped cream then pour a layer of graham crumbs.

Add sliced bananas along the side of the trifle bowl and place some in the center to complete the layer.
Spread pudding over the bananas to complete the first batch of ingredients.

Repeat the process again starting with the cake, caramel sauce, whipped topping, graham crumbs, banana and pudding.

Finish it off with a layer of whipped cream and a final drizzle of caramel sauce.

Refrigerate for a minimum of 4 hours before enjoying.
